How Can It Be So Good and So Bad At The Same Time?

December 23, 2014

So I woke up yesterday morning feeling refreshed and excited about my day. My theme song for the day was James Brown “I Feel Good”. I put on my running shoes. I was ready to go. This day would have no constraints. I was going to run without my Garmin, no time, no distance, and no pace would be kept today. A free run!!!

I love to run at the beach. The weather was perfect. As my run began, I greeted everyone with a “Good Morning” as I passed them. I was in a beautiful place physically and mentally. My thoughts were life is good. Running clears my mind and it puts me at peace. I meditate, pray and come up with solutions (if there’s a problem) while running.  Always by the end of my run, I feel rejuvenated.

As I went on my course, my focus was on how good I was feeling and not the bridge that I was approaching in less than a mile away. Yikes, I hadn’t run this bridge since April when I was training for the 21 Miler race at Big Sur.   Now the length of this bridge is 117.88 ft. and width is 2,185.10 ft., sounds scary right?  Now, all you technical people don’t try to figure this out in miles. The measurements are given for dramatic effect.  My inner voice began to question: “How are you going to do this?” “Are you going to just tackle the bridge full speed ahead?” “Are you going to walk or speed walk?” “Are you going to turn around and not cross it today?” It’s been 8 months since I ran this bridge. Quite naturally there was a little apprehension. As I came closer to the bridge, I started thinking that running is like life.

As life can mimic my running course, what do we do when we come to the bridge of life? What is a bridge? Dictionary .com has one definition of a bridge as; a connecting, transitional, or intermediate route or phase between two adjacent elements, activities, conditions, or the like. Do we cross it or turn in the opposite direction? What’s its purpose?

We are going on our merry way, life is good. Our finances, family, health and relationships are good, and then boom something happens, a bridge comes into focus. Is life still good at the same time something bad is happening?

   To be continued…..
